Wetlands

The network of abundant wetlands serves as the lifeline of Asamannoor Grama Panchayat, located in the Koovappady Block of Ernakulam district. The area's natural wetlands comprise the nearby Periyar River, various streams both large and small flowing through the panchayat, and low-lying paddy fields. These water sources play a crucial role in maintaining groundwater levels, ensuring the availability of drinking water in wells, and supporting the cultivation of crops such as paddy, bananas, and vegetables. However, encroachments and waste dumping associated with modernization currently pose significant challenges to these wetlands. Nevertheless, under the leadership of local self-government bodies and the Haritha Keralam Mission, community-driven wetland development initiatives aimed at rejuvenating streams and conserving soil and water are actively underway in Ashamannoor.

The watershed development report for Asamannoor Grama Panchayat, published in 2018, is a crucial development document prepared to ensure the comprehensive conservation of the region's soil and water resources. Formulated through the coordination of the Haritha Keralam Mission and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, this report is based on a scientific analysis of the topography, existing water sources, and agricultural practices of each watershed within the panchayat. It primarily outlines proposals for rainwater harvesting, the deepening and restoration of streams and canals, soil erosion control, and the recharging of groundwater levels. Emphasizing the revitalization of the agricultural sector and drought resilience, this master plan has played a significant role in achieving sustainable development through local community participation.
